This cooperation with the secondary school Oiriall was a disaster. It left a whole bunch of unfinished pages... some were thankfully short... others longer and written in pidgin.
Maureen Potter, so far (as there are a lot more to go through), has been one of the best, but still required extensive editing.

And who does this editing ?
The school, the schoolteachers, Dowlinme ... ? No, me. Grrr ǃ
It seems I am just about the only person here who cares enough and has the skills to tidy up.

Most of the pages were left with a model in English and some text in Irish.
If it is just to create a biography with one or two lines, I don t see how that helps the Vicipéid or women. Might as well not start. None of the students it seems (from what I have gone through so far ) had the ability to write articles, let alone source material (much easier to write if able to research material as Gaeilge).
@Dowlinme Please, if you are not ready to take the time to tidy up afterwards, then don't launch projects such as this again.

@TGcoa the project is not finished for this year, it will be finished at the end of this month at which time the teachers will comb through the articles along with Alison and Kevin, who have kindly offered to look through all of them as well. Reaching out and asking us for an update would have been a far more productive thing. If you want to talk to someone about this project, that would be me, Dowlinme was kindly volunteering with Wikimedia Community Ireland and the project last year. We are in the pilot phase currently, so any of these initial issues will be ironed out in the future.
I disagree with you completely on your stance on stubs (here and below), stubs are a useful way in for new editors and serve to demonstrate what content can be worked on (not everyone comes to editing with a defined subject interest). Welsh Wikipedia have also managed to have a 50/50 gender divide in their biographies through the strategic use of stub articles to seed content for editors to develop further, and also work very well with Wikidata to lift the burden on individual editors. If you're not interested in the gender gap, that is not an issue, but this project is.
As @Alison has mentioned below, unless the Vicipéid community comes to a consensus about not wanting stubs or starts dictating the level of language ability welcomed, then that is something we would consider in relation to the Irish language outreach we conduct.
Other language from Welsh to Albanian have very successfully worked with primary and secondary school students, and other members of the Vicipéid community are willing to work with this group, and I'm very grateful to them. As Alison mentioned, she has created a maintenance category for the articles created, so you can avoid any of that content and leave it to the editors who want to work with the students. During the 2022 Wikimedia Summit, the Movement Charter Drafting Committee (MCDC) presented the first outline of the Movement Charter, giving a glimpse on the direction of its future work, and the Charter itself. The MCDC then integrated the initial feedback collected during the Summit. Before proceeding with writing the Charter for the whole Movement, the MCDC wants to interact with community members and gather feedback on the drafts of the three sections: Preamble, Values & Principles, and Roles & Responsibilities (intentions statement). The Movement Charter drafts will be available on the Meta page here on November 14, 2022. Community wide consultation period on MC will take place from November 20 to December 18, 2022. With the goal of ensuring that people are well informed to fully participate in the conversations and are empowered to contribute their perspective on the Movement Charter, three “Ask Me Anything about Movement Charter" sessions have been scheduled in different time zones. Response to UK Gov's: Minority languages of the nations of Britain

Wikimedia UK wish to respond to the UK Government's 'call to evidence' re its Inquiry on Minority languages. To this end, Wikimedia UK's CEO Lucy Compton-Reid will chair a Zoom meeting to collect our thoughts, and publish our response. Her request follows:

The Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) of the UK government is currently running an Inquiry on Minority languages, with a 'call to evidence' until 10th March. Details of the inquiry are here:

Wikimedia UK is planning to submit a response to this inquiry, as we see it as a valuable opportunity to emphasise the importance of support for indigenous minority languages. We are planning to highlight the impact that thriving minority languages have on cultural identity and community cohesion, and the role of Wikimedia in enabling indigenous minority language speakers to freely access - or indeed, to contribute to - a body of knowledge and information in their language. However, we would love to include the voices of contributors to indigenous language Wikipedias within our submission, to make sure we are representing a range of views and perspectives. To this end, we are holding a meeting (over Zoom) to discuss the questions posed by the inquiry.

The call will be 12noon - 1pm on Wednesday 1st March and it would be great if you could join us. Do let me know if you can make it and we will send you the zoom link nearer the time. If you can't make the meeting but would like to contribute your views, please do feel free to email us your thoughts on any of the questions.

Talk pages project

Screenshot showing the talk page design changes that are currently available as beta features at all Wikimedia wikis. These features include information about the number of people and comments within each discussion.

The Editing team is nearly finished with this first phase of the Talk pages project. Nearly all new features are available now in the Beta Feature for Discussion tools.

It will show information about how active a discussion is, such as the date of the most recent comment. There will soon be a new "Cuir topaic leis" button. You will be able to turn them off at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-editing-discussion. Please tell them what you think.

Daily edit completion rate by test group: DiscussionTools (test group) and MobileFrontend overlay (control group)

An A/B test for Discussion tools on the mobile site has finished. Editors were more successful with Discussion tools. The Editing team is enabling these features for all editors on the mobile site.

New Project: Edit Check

The Editing team is beginning a project to help new editors of Wikipedia. It will help people identify some problems before they click "Foilsigh athruithe". Wikimedia Ukraine, in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine and Ukrainian Institute, has launched the third edition of writing challenge "Ukraine's Cultural Diplomacy Month", which lasts from 1st until 31st March 2023. The campaign is dedicated to famous Ukrainian artists of cinema, music, literature, architecture, design and cultural phenomena of Ukraine that are now part of world heritage. We accept contribution in every language! The most active contesters will receive prizes.

We invite you to take part and help us improve the coverage of Ukrainian culture on Wikipedia in your language! Also, we plan to set up a banner to notify users of the possibility to participate in such a challenge!

Regarding these series of edits from TGCoa, specifically these comments;

We should be far less tolerant of allowing pages like this remain on the Vicipéid... wasting my and everyone's time. Many of these students weren’t bothered to even spell check or cross check their work. Let’s only allow serious people, serious on making a best effort, to contribute to the Vicipéid

I'd like to bring this discussion to the broader community. Yes, the school kids have been creating articles here and yes, they're of varying quality. Poor quality articles reflects badly - I totally get that. For my part, I've been leaving them largely untouched - it's an exercise for them and not me - just adding {{Glanadh}} and WD Boscaí Sonraí really, maybe adding a 1-line intro. I've added a hidden tracking category, Catagóir:Coláiste Oiriall to each one, so we can corral them nicely and address the issues when they move on to other things. Just mitigating any problems, really.

That said, I really see the value of allowing schoolkids in Gaeilscoileanna to edit here - regardless of their quality. It's an exercise in enabling and empower them, it's teaching them the value of the language and of collaboration, and it's driving their interest in our native language and introducing them to Gaeilgóirí outside the confines of school. All that is good, IMO. But I do understand the frustration that that brings, and I'm trying to do my best to accommodate both sets of opinions here.

As this is the pilot phase of this project, I will admit that there have been teething problems, and with the next cohort we will make much more use of their clár dubh and stop the use of the generic template in mainspace. I have been so appreciative of the patience and understanding of Kevin and Alison given the varying quality, and I know the teachers were planning to comb through the articles for content but also grammar and spelling once the students had finished their work here at the end of this month. I hope that the work of the students who really engaged with the editing and research will be kept and appreciated, as many of them have but a lot of effort into the content they have added so far. Thanks for the update on the project, Rebecca! How about we do this?
  • Let's build a standard template that the students can use going forward. I'm happy to help draft that and the students can just copy/paste that. We can add standard templates, categories and the usual stuff - as Gaeilge this time - which will mean that their stub articles will be reasonably okay from the get-go.
  • Maybe direct the students to get the first line down before anything else; "[[Ealaíontóir]] Éireannach as Chontae Chorcaí ab ea '''Jo Schmoe''' ([[12 Eanáir]] [[1876]] - [[10 Feabhra]] [[1954]])." with standardized dates, etc. That'll go a long way to set articles on the right footing, IMO.
  • Instead of {{Glanadh}}, let's use a custom header which shows the article is part of a school project and for readers to be patient and understanding. Again, I'm happy to do that. It can be incorporated into the template.
  • If the articles are created in their own clár dubh spaces, that's great but they won't be able to use categories and templates which cross spaces so that might make it more complex. They can also use the Draft:Rud éigin space too. I love the idea of the articles being drafted and the daltaí having the joy of seeing their articles "graduating" into mainspace and being accepted by the community :)
  • There's huge value in us being accepting of them, and they're seeing their articles being improved by the community rather than being rejected. They'll learn from every grammatical correction they see being made by others, if it's done in the spirit of kindness
  • I'll put up my own hand and say that my own chuid Gaeilge comes from my own experiences of the Árdteist and of a religious education from 4 years old, my years in the Gaeltacht as a student, and my love of the language. I'm aware of my own limitations here which is why I'm reluctant to delve too much into mainspace (I'm just so out of practice!) and do a lot of infrastructure and automation instead. I deeply appreciate the corrections I get from the likes of @Kevin Scannell:, who shows patience and kindness. So I'd really like to see that being extended to the students here as a negative experience will just set them on the wrong path.
  • I wouldn't mind if the community agreed to leave the articles as they were - at least till the end of the month - and maybe revdel the edit summary as that's really going to demotivate and hurt them, IMO. I do get the sentiment / frustration behind that, though.

Hi Alison! I'm hoping we can find a balance between encouraging the students and ensuring that what ends up published on the site is of high enough quality. Personally I'd be in favor having them work on drafts as a User page before being accepted/approved by the community and publishing to mainspace. Having that approval as a goal might even encourage some of the students to engage more deeply with the work. I'd certainly be willing to invest my own time in helping improve the writing. I think that Alison's suggestions there are all very good, and I will bring them into the feedback on the student and teacher packs we are developing. Not all language Wikipedias have a sandbox/clár dubh space, but that is something for us to consider when suggesting how the materials will need to be localised (the Frisian Wikipedia has no user sandbox function at the moment. for example). I know setting up a user page is no great issue once you start getting used to editing, but it can be a big hurdle for new editors.
We could perhaps think about an on-Wiki barnstar or other acknowledgement of that work once it has been accepted? I had moved one problematic article into a userspace, but that was also blanked by TGcoa (here). So if we can decide that userspaces are okay for drafting and less intervention, unless there are issues with copyright etc. The "educational assignment" templates used on EN talk pages might be useful to look at? (e.g. Irene Broe)
I have a newly translated version of the student materials, that I am happy to share with anyone over email, if they are interested. We have also had some of the Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom introductory booklets translated this month by some DCU translation students, which I can also share.
I will say that from my experience on EN, when we get third level students to work in draft, once the assignment is finished very few follow through and publish them (and that is just sometimes copying and pasting a new paragraph into an existing article like Irene Broe above). So we would really need to follow through on that, and be active in encouraging (myself, the teachers, and interested Vicipéidóirí) them to take that extra step. I have started trying to move the work across, but it's not quite the same effect or ownership of the work for those less confident students. Smirkybec (plé) 17:06, 13 Márta 2023 (UTC)[reply]




Well as you might expect, I am far less open to ‘experiments’ like this.
Everyone who opens a Vicipéid page has a right to expect that it is written in intelligible Irish, not pidgin. The Vicipéid is written to serve its readers, not schoolchildren. Would articles in pidgin English ever be tolerated for the sake of education ? Plus this is against the background of a poor image of the Vicipéid among Gaeilgeoirí. The messiness of the Vicipéid has been frightening off potential editors, the ones that can actually write decent Irish .


Who on the Vicipéid corrects pages written in pidgin ? As far as I can see, I am the editor making the most corrections. And the Oriall articles would go uncorrected if not for me. Correcting someone else’s half-baked text is a totally miserable task. There is some glory and satisfaction in creating a new page… but cleaning up text is drudgery, and all the harder - and slower - for non-native speakers like me..

As for the schoolkids, you are putting the cart in front of the house. Helping the schoolkids is first and foremost helping them do research, whether in English or as Gaeilge, but particularly so in Gaeilge. If you want to write an article about X in English, you are most unlikely to just write off the top of your head, but you will first read about X to get some ideas.

There are sources in Irish too, but harder to find, and this is where the education should start. If you want to write about X, it starts by reading about X as Gaeilge. These kids however are not at a stage where they can do that.

Some editors on the Vicipéid just translate (that’s really hard… there are professional translation courses and it should cause some reflection that of the 2,000 or so trained Irish - English translators, none as far as I know contribute to the VIcipéid).

The alternative approach, the more natural one, is to source material in Irish and use that. Most people are likely to find that much easier and quicker, but they have to know how to search and be motivated. It is not reasonable to expect secondary school children to be able to do this.


Even if written in OK Irish, many of the articles will end up as 3 lines of biography. I don’t see how that helps the Vicipéid or women. For one, if I see a 3-line stub, I am much more likely to leave it alone and go create an article with more depth on some other topic. Having a load of 3-line mediocre stubs on women is more likely to fossilise the biographies than encourage more editing. Instead the Vicipéid needs richer, deeper content as Gaeilge to attract readers, not yet more half-baked stubs.

A much more meaningful project would be to pick a woman in the news, like :Kate Forbes; for which there is a lot of material as Gaeilge, and get pupils to write a few lines about different aspects of her career or policies, and for the teacher to bring it all together in the end.
Alternatively the pupils could identify articles that could do with more photos or categories ? That’d be much more effective in teaching them how to structure pages.

I thought all the Oriall articles dated from 2 months ago. If the article is not cleared up within 2 months, I don’t think it ever will. However I see there is a new batch of articles from a few days ago.
I wouldn’t mind so much if the teachers or Dowlinme would clean up the articles eventually (like those from 2 months ago). But I strongly suspect that the only person doing any clean-up in the end will be me, if I can find the time. So the sooner we call a stop to this experiment, the better.

I disagree with this on the strongest terms. The #1 tenet of Wikipedia is that "anyone can edit". For starters, take a look at an Príomhleathanach; "an chiclipéid shaor ar féidir le cách í a chur in eagar". And Vicipéid:Réamhrá - a page created 18 years ago by @Kwekubo:;

Don't be afraid. Be bold. Anyone can edit. These are the pillars on which Vicipéid is built. A stub article - even a Chaco one - is better than no article, in Wiki philosophy, and things trend slowly toward completion and towards something better. But that has to start with a single step somehow. I see folks over on enwiki that I've known since 2004 - one of them started editing at 13 years old and is now an admin and bureaucrat over there. They didn't come out of the gate with that level of performance.
That said, I agree with both you and Kevin and I think we have to make compromises and try to manage better what people do in mainspace. That's what the Draft: namespace and the clár dubh are for. They're not indexed either, which is helpful. I've laid out a set of suggestions above and Kevin has weighed in on them. I'm pretty sure we can come to consensus as a community (or even a 'community'). I recommend you weigh in too, rather than dismiss any suggestions outright as you have here. Because - to be somewhat blunt - the community will decide and we'll go with consensus and move on. I grew up in Ireland in the 70s and the way we were taught Irish (IMO) killed any grá we could possibly have had. At least it did in me. Three glorious summers in the Gaeltacht in the 80s changed my mind. I found out that folks in Corca Dhuibhne had a habit of playing fast-and-loose with the language, weaving in the odd focal Béarla here and there, and so on. The bar to entry was pretty low, and people were encouraged to do their best. Nothing, IMO, kills off someone's enthusiasm and joy than setting the bar way to high, then vilifying them and sneering at them - as you have done here - especially when it happens to a child. Don't do that. Seriously. I don't mind cleaning up the mess around here as best I can, and Kevin has said as much above. I think I land somewhere in the middle. First, setting aside the school project and looking at the Irish Wikipedia as a whole, I'm sympathetic to TGCoa's viewpoint. In fact, my main goal in returning to Wikipedia a year or two ago and agreeing to be an admin was to try and move the needle on quality enough to start attracting a community of fluent or native-speaking contributors. I've tried to be aggressive about deleting machine translated content when it's clear there has been no effort or intent to post-edit or improve. The server running HusseyBot is warm to the touch from correcting so many spelling/grammar errors. And I've gone back and have manually deleted many thousands of words of totally unreadable Irish by a handful of contributors that did a tremendous amount of damage (rivalling what happened at sco.wikipedia.org in my opinion, just without the media coverage). There's more we could do — for example I'd be in favor of shutting down the Content Translation tool except for an approved list of editors.
But again this is all separate from the school project. In general I'm willing to bend over backwards to support Gaeltacht students or students attending a Gaelscoil who are interested in contributing. And in this case I'd be happy to wait until the project is over and see where things stand. This presumes a good faith effort from the students and teachers to leave things in as polished a state as possible. If so, post-editing shouldn't be too bad, and otherwise at that point we can decide which articles to keep or not. kscanne (plé) 12:46, 15 Márta 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I invite community members with experience and deep interest in community health and governance to nominate themselves to be part of the U4C building committee, which needs people who are:

  • Community members in good standing
  • Knowledgeable about movement community processes, such as, but not limited to, policy drafting, participatory decision making, and application of existing rules and policies on Wikimedia projects
  • Aware and appreciative of the diversity of the movement, such as, but not limited to, languages spoken, identity, geography, and project type
  • Committed to participate for the entire U4C Building Committee period from mid-May - December 2023
  • Comfortable with engaging in difficult, but productive conversations

We have recently become unable to access the WorldCat API which provided the ability to generate citations using ISBN numbers. The Wikimedia Foundation's Editing team is investigating several options to restore the functionality, but will need to disable ISBN citation generation for now.

This affects citations made with the VisualEditor Automatic tab, and the use of the citoid API in gadgets and user scripts, such as the autofill button on refToolbar. Please note that all the other automatic ways of generating citations, including via URL or DOI, are still available.

You can keep updated on the situation via Phabricator, or by reading the next issues of m:Tech News. If you know of any users or groups who rely heavily on this feature (for instance, someone who has an upcoming editathon), I'd appreciate it if you shared this update with them.
