File agus staraí Éireannach ba ea Flann Mainistreach (bás 25ú Samhain 1056).[1][2]

Ciannachta Bhreá, ba ea muintir Fhlainn, a thug ó thús na céad mhílaoise abbaí agus daoine suntasacha eile do Mhainistir Bhuithe (modern Contae Lú). Echthigern mac Aonghasa ba ea a athair, a bhí ina fhear léinn sa mhainistir.[3] Bhí Flann féin ina fer légind agus d'éirigh a mhac, Echthigern (bás 1067), ina airchinneach na mainistreach.[4]

Is as na blianta i ndiaidh Chath Chluain Tarbh (1014), agus Maol Seachnaill Ó Domhnaill Uí Néill an Deiscirt ar ais i réim mar Ardrí na hÉireann (1014-1022), a thagann na chéad saothair le Fhan ar féidir dátaí a chur leo. Is iad Ríg Themra dia tesbann tnú agus Ríg Themrea toebaige íar ttain, le chéile stair ríthe na Teamhrach ach ar son chlann Uí Néill.[5]

I measc a dhánta eile tá: Mide maigen clainne Cuind[6] maidir le Clann Cholmáin, muintir Mhaoil Seachnaill; agus Mugain ingen Choncraid chain agus Síl nÁedo Sláine na sleg maidir le Síol Aodha Sláine, iar thiarnaí Chiannachta Breá. Luaitear le Flann fosta srath chuig dhán ar ríthe agus stair míleata Chineál Eoghain agus ar bhunús seanscéalach an dún, Grianán Ailigh.[7][8]

Feictear roinnt dánta le Flann i Leabhar Gabhála na hÉireann agus bhí tionchar ag leith ag a saothair maidir leis na Tuatha Dé Danann.[9][10] Tá ann cúpla dán faoi stair domhanda nó tanaí as litríocht chlasaiceach.[11] Is é an dán is tábhachtaí ná Réidig dam, a Dé, do nim, maidir le ríthe de nós Eusebius, a bhfuil nasc aige le Chronica Maiora le Bede.[12][13]

Le linn na Nua-Aoise Luaithe, luadh le Fhan roinnt dréachtaí sioncronachta próis na meánaoise, cé go bhfuil easpa fianaise ann.[14] Tá roinnt acu bunaithe ar nós Chronicon le Jerome.[15] I saothair eile, tá liosta de ríthe Éireann agus Alban, leagtha amach chun comhaoisigh a léiriú. Is foinse thábhachtach í seo faoi stair na hAlban, an é Flann an t-údar nó nach é.[16][17]

In ainneoin a bhunúis doiléir, bhí tionchar mór ag an smaoineamh úd ar staraithe níos deireanaí, Eoin Mac Néill[18] agus Francis John Byrne[19] ina measc. De réir Dauvit Broun, chuir Flann béim ar ríogacht thar ríthe.[20]

Fuair Flann bás ar an 25ú Samhain 1056.[21] Insítear faoi gurbh é aird-fer leighinn & sui senchusa Erenn.[22]

Feictear rann maidir le Flann i ndán le duine gan aon ar chúirt easpaig Aiste Uí Fhorréide (easpag Ard Mhacha, 1032–1056), cumtha idir na blianta 1032 agus 1042.[23][24]
