Tógadh é i bPabail, an baile céanna inar tógadh Ruaraidh MacThòmais agus Anne Frater. Is í Gaeilge na hAlban a phríomhtheanga. Fuair a athair bás leis an eitinn. Chuaigh sé go Sgoil Phabail, Sgoil MhicNeacail i Steòrnabhagh agus sa bhliain 1949 bhain sé céim amach sa Bhéarla ó Oilthigh Obar Dheathain. Rinne sé seirbhís náisiúnta agus tar éis na seirbhíse, d'oibrigh sé mar mhúinteoir i mBruaich Chluaidh agus ar feadh mblianta, in Oban. D'fhág sé Àrd-Sgoil an Òbain i 1977, toisc go raibh sé ag iarraidh scríobh go lánaimseartha. Nuair a phós sé Donalda Gillies Logan, bhog siad go Taigh an Uillt. Sa bhliain 1980 fuair sé OBE. Faraor, bhuail an ailse é GUS fuair sé bás i 1998, nuair a bhí sé 70 bliain d'aois.
