Ríocht Ghaelach stairiúil ba ea Bréifne Thiar (nó Breifne Uí Ruairc, a bhí ann ón mbliain 1256 go dtí 1605, suite i gContae Liatroma an lae inniu. Tháinig ann don ríocht tar éis cogadh ar feadh i bhfad idir clanna Uí Ruairc agus Uí Raghallaigh, agus deighleadh ríocht Bhréifne ina Bréifne Thoir agus Bréifne Thiar. Cruthaíodh a teorainneacha reatha sa bhliain 1583 nuair a rinneadh contae de Bhréifne Thiar agus tugadh an t-ainm “Liatroim” air, as an sráidbhaile, dún Uí Ruairc. Bhíodh muintir Uí Ruairc i gceannas ann go dtí an 17ú haois, nuair a coigistíodh a gcuid tailte ag Ríocht Shasana.[1]
