Plé:Uinseann Ó Colla (Mad Dog Coll)
In the en wikipedia Mad Dog Coll's name is rendered in Irish as Uinseann Ó Colla whereas here it is Uinseann Mac Colla. I have also seen his name rendered as Mad Dog Mac Giolla Cóill [[1]]. Which version is the correct version to use? I've tried to check the correct Irish language transcription of the surname Coll but so far to no avail. MacTire01 09:23, 18 Eanáir 2008 (UTC)
- I'm not sure either. I have the idea that it is originally a Scottish gallowglass surname, and thus Mac Colla, not Ó. However, not even Breandán Delap in his book about Mad Dog gives the Irish form of the name. What is the usual way to render Coll into Irish in Donegal today? - Ah ha! Found it. Apparently it is an English surname first recorded near Lincolnshire [[2]]. When it arrived in Ireland it was not translated into Irish except in Ulster (go mórmhór i dTír Chonaill) where it is assumed to be Gallowglass [[3]] and there it was rendered as Mac Colla. I think we can change the Irish translation in the English wikipedia to match this. What do you think? MacTire01 10:05, 18 Eanáir 2008 (UTC)
