Cumadóir ceoil Éireannach, bailitheoir ceoil thraidisiúnta agus scríbhneoir ba ea Charlotte Olivia Milligan Fox (17 Márta 1864 – 25 Márta 1916).[1][2][3]

Rugadh Charlotte Milligan san Ómaigh i gContae Thír Eoghain ar an 17 Márta 1864 do Charlotte Burns (1842–1916) agus do Seaton F. Milligan (1837–1916), Meitidistigh.[4] Ba í an duine ba shine í de chlann aon duine dhéag, clann ar mhair naonúr díobh. Cláraíodh an naonúr sa Choláiste Meitidisteach i mBéal Feirste.

Rinne Charlotte staidéar ar an bpianó agus ar chumadóireacht i gColáiste Ríoga an Cheoil i Londain agus sna hardscoileanna ceoil in Frankfurt agus in Milano.[5]

In 1892,[6] chuir sí fúithi i Londain tar éis Charles Eliot Fox a phósadh. Bhunaigh sí Irish Folk Song Society in Londain in 1904 agus bhí sí ina rúnaí oinigh ar an gcumann. Rinne sí cuairt na hÉireann ag bailiú amhráin thraidisiúnta agus fonn, agus rinne sí féin agus a deirfiúracha Edith Wheeler agus Alice Milligan roinnt turas i gContae Aontroma ó 1909 go 1910. Thaifead siad agus thrascríobh amhráin agus d’fhoilsigh ailt agus scóir in The Journal of the Irish Folk Song Society.[7]

In 1910 thug Fox cuairt ar chósta oirthearach Mheiriceá, mar ar bunaíodh craobh den Irish Folk Song Society i Nua-Eabhrac. Léiríodh an dráma The Bardic Recital ar an 16 Márta san Amharclann Náisiúnta in Washington, agus ba í Fox a bhailigh agus a chóirigh an ceol.[8]

Ba í Fox a tháinig ar pháipéir Edward Bunting, agus de réir a huachta fágadh iad ag Ollscoil na Banríona, Béal Feirste.[9] Bhain sí tairbhe as na páipéir chun The Annals of the Irish Harpers (London, 1911) a scríobh, leabhar a mhúscail suim arís sa tseanchláirseach agus in Bunting.

Irish Folk Song Society

In 1904 bhunaigh Fox agus Alfred Perceval Graves an Irish Folk Song Society of London, cumann a fáisceadh as an Folk Song Society, a bunaíodh in 1898.[1] Bhí sé de chuspóir aige amhráin agus foinn as Éirinn a bhailiú agus a fhoilsiú, i dteannta léachtaí agus ceolchoirmeacha a reáchtáil.
