THE LOLLARDS' PRISON.

The Lollards' Tower in Lambeth Palace contains within its thick and ancient walls the historic prison room which is here represented. Built in the early part of the fifteenth century by Archbishop Chicheley, it was used as a place of confinement for the unhappy persons, known as Lollards, who had incurred the censure of the Church on account of the crime which was supposed to be involved in their heretical opinions. The prison is at the top of the tower, approached by a winding stairway, and entered through a doorway so narrow that only one person can pass at a time. The Lollards' Prison stands as a memorial of the long and painful struggle which was maintained by our forefathers on behalf of liberty of opinion and freedom of religious belief. Happily, the enemies of liberty have been routed, and the Lollards' Prison is in our days without a tenant.
