Scríobhadh Leabhar Bhaile an Mhóta, ARÉ MS 23 P 12, 275 ff., in 1390 nó 1391, i mBaile an Mhóta nó in aice leis, anois i gContae Shligigh, ach i dtuath An Chorainn ag an am.

Déanta agus stair

Díolaimíodh[1] an leabhar ag deireadh na 14ú haoise, ag caisleán Bhaile am Mhóta ar son Tonnaltaigh Mhic Dhonnchadha. Ba é an príomhthiomsaitheoir é Manas Ó Dubhgeannáin, sliocht de chlann a bhí ina nOllaimh agus scríobhaithe i ngiollacht Mhic Dhonnchadha agus cháin Mhic Dhiarmada. Ba scríobhaithe eile an leabhair iad Solomon Ó Droma, sliocht de chlann mór le rá as Contae Fhear Manach, agus Riobáird Mac Síoda. Is bailiúchán de shaothair níos sine é an leabhar, den chuid is mó lámhscríbhinní scaoilte agus doiciméid thairbheacha, a fágadh ar oidhreacht ag Mac Dhonnchadha.

Ar an gcéad leathanach, faightear léaráid den Áirc Naoi mar a mheas an scríobhfaí mar a bhí. Tá an chéad leathanach scríofa ar iarraidh, agus tosaíonn an dara le cur síos ar aoiseanna an domhain; Pádraig agus a theaghlach; treoracha Chormaic do rí; agus suirbhéireacht fhisiciúil agus gheolaíoch ar Éirinn. Part of the work is devoted to the An Fhiannaíocht agus Brian Bóramha, agus Leabhar na gCeart. Tá ann chomh maith tráchtais ar ghairm san fhile, ar mheadaracht éigse, ar scríbhneoireacht Oghaim agus ar theangeolaíocht. As deireadh an leabhar, tá aistriúcháin ón nGréigis: léirscrios na Traí agus fánaíocht Odaiséis, agus ina theannta achoimre an 'Aeneid' le Virgil, ag tús le haitheasc Nestor.

The Book of Ballymote, like many of its kind, has made history by its wanderings. For over a hundred years it was a treasured possession of the McDonaghs of Corran. About the beginning of the 16th century, it fell into the possession of the O'Donnells with whom it remained until the Teitheadh na nIarlaí in 1603. From 1620 until 1767 it was in the library of Trinity College, Dublin. It disappeared from the library and was later found in Burgundy, France. In 1785 it was returned to the Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann where it remained as one of the Academy's most treasured possessions. The work was photographed by the Academy in 1887 and two hundred copies of it were made.

The first page of the work contains a drawing of Áirc Naoi. The first written page is lost, and the second page describes the ages of the world.
