You must know, my Lord, that the vintagethis year about Bordeaux is quite destroyed bya terrible hail, which cut up all the vines through-out the whole district which furnishes you withso very much good claret in England. This, Ifind, has set many commissions a going in thisneighbourhood, to buy up the strong, ordinarywines, which,—as they will bear the sea andcan be shipped for 40s. a hogshead at Lett, nearthis town, and landed at London for 20s. more—will not be drunk at more than 2s. a bottle.But your Lordship understands this calculationbetter than I ; this I am persuaded of, that upon him, see Mr. Thomas Seccombes admirable Introduction toSmolletts Travels through France and Italy (Worlds Classics,1907).
