English: St Mary's Church, Gowran, Co. KIlkenny. The interior of the ruined part of the church, looking towards the tower. The lowest stage of the tower is the oldest part; the nave was rebuilt c.1270 and there were repairs and alterations in the 15C, but it was ruined by the mid-18C. It became a collegiate church founded in 1312 by Edmund Butler. In 1826 a new church was built for the Church of Ireland on the site of the chancel, using also the tower as an entrance. This church closed in the 1970s and the site was acquired by the state as a national Monument. Interesting carvings from other sites have been placed in the nave.
