Notes
English:

George Nevill, 5th Baron Bergavenny (c. 1469–1535), was a keen jouster and close friend of Henry VIII. He followed a military career, finally becoming Constable of Dover and Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports. Implicated in the treason of his father-in-law, Edward Stafford, 3rd Duke of Buckingham, he had returned to favour with the king by the early 1530s, when this drawing was made.

In the words of art historian Susan Foister: "Here the ink reinforcements define the loosened flesh of the face and stress the bulk of Bergavenny's nose. The initial chalk drawing, in its freedom and vigour resembling those of Holbein's first visit to England, has defined Bergavenny's neck and shoulders unencumbered by the two fur collars, the positioning of which remained unresolved". Holbein based a miniature portrait of Bergavenny on this study, one of his first works in the medium.
