English: South America is currently confronted with a severe heatwave. On 11 March, Buenos Aires in Argentina recorded its highest-ever temperature for March at 38.6°C, while Mercedes in Uruguay saw the temperature soar to a record value of 40.5°C. On the same day, the Copernicus Sentinel-3 satellite measured the Land Surface Temperature, which reached above 48°C in some areas of Argentina and Uruguay as early as 13:12 UTC (10:12 local time). Note: this data shows Land Surface Temperature (i.e. the temperature of the soil) and not air temperature at ground level. The Copernicus Sentinel-3 satellites are equipped with the Sea and Land Surface Temperature Radiometer (SLSTR) instrument, allowing for accurate worldwide monitoring of land surface temperature.
